memorial bench, as part of ultimo intimo’s second furniture collection named TRÜMMER, was unveiled during dutch design week 2025.

IN MEMORIAM MEI RELICTI
in memory of my former self

a place to sit and mourn the self that is no more,
the dreams that never came to be.
the places left behind,
the voices that once filled them with meaning,
the souls and objects lost to time and distance.
sit here and rest with the absence,
honoring all that shall not return.

memorial bench is the second piece in the narrative of TRÜMMER. it references the benches of the swiss alps, often dedicated to the memory of those who have been lost. but where can we sit to remember ourselves – our past selves? this bench is for one. a burnt and charred plank of wood seems to float between two large, black rocks. on the plank, aged metal lettering, worn and beginning to dissolve, reads in memoriam mei relicti, a latin phrase meaning “in memory of my former self.” it is a quiet act of acknowledgment: honoring the self that once was, and making space for the self yet to come.
