two parts of the studio. one intimate journey.
in the world of ultimo intimo, there’s a clear distinction between series and collections.

series are the product of the studio’s lab work — ongoing material and process explorations. small, concrete, and usually hands-on. they’re how new forms, textures, materials, and methods are developed. this is where the studio’s form language takes shape — the how behind the vision.

collections are the bigger picture — shaped by emotion, reflection, and narrative.
each one explores a complex theme from the realm of the human experience: what it means to be alive, to change, to long, to belong. collections are developed once a year and unveiled in an immersive presentation during dutch design week, where the space itself becomes part of the work — not just objects, but an atmosphere.

series are the how.
collections are the why.

together, they form the rhythm of ultimo intimo.

about the brut series

the brut series began as a personal material investigation — experimenting with foil and epoxy until a surprising sculptural capacity revealed itself. and as wendell castle once said: “if it’s upbeat or surprising, it’s probably useful.”

the most compelling aspect of this process is its sense of empowerment — the way it invites pure self-expression and playful exploration. in that sense, it strongly echoes the concept of art brut: raw, intuitive creation by untrained hands, where maker and material are in constant dialogue. what concept could better describe this approach than art brut itself? hence the name of the series.

another reason this process captivates is its transformation of something so easily discarded — almost a symbol of disposability in today’s society — into something grande and shiny. this act of material appropriation offers a second life, a more lasting and perhaps more meaningful purpose.

chaise brut, 2025.

born from a hands-on exploration of aluminium foil and epoxy, chaise brut elevates a disposable material into something raw, reflective, and unexpectedly grand. sculptural yet instinctive, it carries the spirit of art brut — where creation is led by intuition, not convention.

this piece asks: where else might we find beauty and magic in the overlooked?

branche brut, 2025.

sculpted from foil and epoxy, branche brut reimagines the humble clothes rail as something raw, elevated, and strangely tender. with its branch-like form and glistening hangers, it balances between function and fantasy — a display of daily life turned ritual.

like its counterpart chaise brut, this piece explores the limitations and unexpected potential of a typically neglected material — aluminum foil — asking where else we might find beauty and meaning in what’s easily discarded.
