vanity, as part of ultimo intimo’s second furniture collection named TRÜMMER, was unveiled during dutch design week 2025.
ALTARE ANIMAE LAPSA
altar of the fallen soul
in the dark night of the soul,
the self is sacrificed on the altar of ruin,
so that another may be born.
black matter consumed
who we no longer are,
leaving us free to become.
vanity marks the beginning of TRÜMMER. it embodies the moment when life – and with it the sense of self – begins to fracture and crumble. the persona once claimed no longer fits; the reflection feels unfamiliar. this is the onset of the dark night of the soul. the vanity’s antiqued mirror speaks of time passing. its clouded surface suggests distance: what once was now feels far away, almost belonging to another life. ego sacrificium is carved into the mirror as a quiet, irreversible act. the ego – which is our sense of self – is not violently destroyed, but consciously surrendered. the black matter consumes who we believed ourselves to be, with its roles, projections and expectations, until nothing recognizable remains. this is the necessary first act of TRÜMMER: the ego must die and the old life it inhabited is sacrificed.
